assessments, in plain words

cor advantage, for the teacher in the room

cor advantage is highscope's observation-based assessment for infants through kindergarten. the teacher gathers anecdotes over a rating period, chooses a level (0 to 7) for each of 34 items across 8 categories, and writes a short narrative for the family and the coach.

what a teacher actually does

drop small anecdotes across a rating period. at the end of the period, pick a level for each item and write two to four sentences that name what the child does now, in language a family can read.

the 8 categories

approaches to learning; social and emotional development; physical development and health; language, literacy, and communication; mathematics; creative arts; science and technology; social studies. each category holds three or more items.

where tiny signals helps

tiny signals does not enter the level in the cor advantage platform. it helps with the writing around it: the anecdote in the moment, the family narrative, the conference draft that pulls the week's observations together.

  • observations, drop the anecdote when it happens, sort it later.
  • conference write up, a one page family draft in about fifteen minutes.
  • handoff, one minute at pickup in the language a family reads.
